Start of the 2026 School Year: Special Safety and Traffic Measures Due to Road Construction in the Boulevard de la Cité-des-Jeunes Area

The City of Vaudreuil-Dorion wishes to inform residents that the start of the 2026 school year will take place under exceptional circumstances due to several major construction projects currently underway in the area of Boulevard de la Cité-des-Jeunes (Route 340) and the surrounding streets. This work, which is necessary to prepare access routes for the future Vaudreuil-Soulanges Hospital, is being carried out by the Ministère des Transports et de la Mobilité durable (MTMD), Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), and the City. It will result in detours, full closures, and alternating traffic, which will have a direct impact on travel around several schools.

General Background: Roadwork on an Unusual Scale

First, Route 340 is completely closed between Boulevard de la Gare and Rue Jean-Béliveau through the end of October. This closure is necessary for the construction of the second roundabout at the intersection with Rue Henry-Ford, a major project that will significantly alter traffic patterns in the area. The first roundabout, located at the corner of Boulevard de la Gare, is currently partially open to traffic, requiring drivers to exercise extra caution.

At the same time, the City reminds residents that alternating one-way traffic will be in effect until the end of September on Boulevard de la Cité-des-Jeunes, between Rue Émile-Bouchard and Rue des Floralies/Bill-Durnan.

These traffic restrictions, combined with the closure of the Pont des Nénuphars and the detour via Rue Jean-Béliveau and Rue Maurice-Richard, are creating particularly heavy traffic near schools.

Finally, Rue Jeannotte is closed to traffic between Boulevard de la Cité-des-Jeunes and Avenue Saint-Charles due to rehabilitation work, including the lining of the water main and sanitary sewer. These projects significantly reduce traffic capacity in this area.

Impact on the Start of the School Year

The Hymne-au-Printemps, des Légendes, and Saint-Michel schools are located directly in the areas affected by detours and road closures. The City anticipates heavy traffic during school drop-off and pick-up times, particularly from August 28 through mid-September. To ensure the safety of children, parents, and residents, an enhanced action plan will be implemented.

Maurice-Richard Area / École de l’Hymne-au-Printemps / École des Légendes

• Increased presence of crossing guards on Rue Maurice-Richard at the intersections with de la Gare, Phil-Goyette, and Jean-Béliveau.
• Enhanced municipal patrols and collaboration with the Sûreté du Québec to monitor traffic behavior.
• Creation of a second temporary drop-off zone on Rue Émile-Bouchard, near the La Croisée building.
• Management of construction workers’ parking to prevent congestion in the area.
• Daily presence of traffic controllers at the White Bridge on school days through mid-September.
• Coordination with school transportation services to adjust bus routes.
• Targeted communication with parents reminding them of safe behaviors: use crosswalks, avoid lingering in the drop-off zone, and follow the instructions of traffic controllers.

Jeannotte Area / École Saint-Michel / Arena / Shops

• Traffic plan adjusted due to a road closure between Avenue Saint-Charles and Boulevard de la Cité-des-Jeunes. However, local traffic is still permitted via Rue du Chanoine-Groulx.
• Access to the arena and École Saint-Michel via Rue Sainte-Madeleine and Rue du Chanoine-Groulx.
• Two crossing guards stationed at school entrances.
• Coordination with the school transportation department to adjust bus routes.
• Communication with residents and businesses in the Rue Jeannotte area.
