Donation bins

The City of Vaudreuil-Dorion regulates all charity donation bins in its territory. They are limited to 20 in number and to specific areas only.

Changes were made to the by-laws in 2015 with the aim of protecting local organizations that rely on these donations to provide community services. The regulations also cover aspects related to safety and aesthetics.

To set up a donation bin, an organization must obtain a location permit, then an operating permit which must be renewed at the beginning of each year. The organization must provide the City with an annual report showing how profits from donated items have been redistributed in accordance with the organization's mission. Once compliant, each bin is identified by a permit sticker ensuring citizens that their donations will actually go to a charitable nonprofit organization.

The City takes inventory of donation bins in its territory on an ongoing basis. In this way, illegal bins are quickly identified. Offenders face fines of up to several thousand dollars per day per bin.

Approved operators

At present, four organizations are allowed to have charity donation bins in Vaudreuil-Dorion: Le Centre d’action bénévole L’Actuel, Grands Frères Grandes Sœurs du grand Montréal, Entraide diabétique du Québec and Le Support - Fondation de la déficience intellectuelle.

Le Centre d’action bénévole L’Actuel is a volunteer centre that has been active in the territory of Vaudreuil-Soulanges for more than 30 years. It helps people who are living alone, isolated, losing their autonomy, facing temporary difficulties or in need of emergency support. Donated items are sold at its thrift shop on Rue Adèle.

Items deposited in the bins operated by Entraide diabétique du Québec and Le Support – Fondation de la déficience intellectuelle are sold to Value Village/Village des valeurs.
