Donation bins

The City of Vaudreuil-Dorion regulates all charity donation bins in its territory. They are limited to 20 in number and to specific areas only.

By-laws

Changes were made to the by-laws in 2015 with the aim of protecting local organizations that rely on these donations to provide community services. The regulations also cover aspects related to safety and aesthetics.

To set up a donation bin, an organization must obtain a location permit, then an operating permit which must be renewed at the beginning of each year. The organization must provide the City with an annual report showing how profits from donated items have been redistributed in accordance with the organization's mission. Once compliant, donation containers are identified with the issued permit, assuring citizens that their donations are really going to non-profit charitable organizations.

The City takes inventory of donation bins in its territory on an ongoing basis. In this way, illegal bins are quickly identified. Offenders face fines of up to several thousand dollars per day per bin.
