Bioblitz at parc-nature Harwood

From April 26th to April 29th, 2024, the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal (CMM) will participate in a global bioblitz called the Défi nature urbaine, organized by the Réseau Biodiversité au campus, Technoparc Oiseaux and the Fédération canadienne de la faune. During these four days, residents from over 400 cities around the world will attempt to document as many species of wildlife and flora as possible using the free iNaturalist application.

The City of Vaudreuil-Dorion is joining the movement by organizing a bioblitz at parc-nature Harwood on April 27th, starting at 9 am. During this free and registration-free activity, citizens will contribute to establishing the biodiversity profile in Vaudreuil-Dorion, while advancing urban conservation efforts.

What is a bioblitz?

A bioblitz is a communal citizen-science effort to record as many species within a designated location and time period as possible. Bioblitzes are great ways to engage the public to connect to their environment while generating useful data for science and conservation.

This activity aims to bring together people of all ages and backgrounds around a common goal: protecting the environment. The planting will have a positive impact on both urban biodiversity and the fight against climate change.

We recommend that you wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. Don't forget your water bottle!

Chasses aux trésors

Since 2020, the City of Vaudreuil-Dorion has been organizing the Chasse aux trésors to give a second life to objects. Citizens are invited to drop off furniture or other objects at the curb that they wish to give to the next person. On a first-come, first-served basis, interested parties will be able to take possession of these treasures, free of charge.

The Chasse aux trésors  take place in May and September. Citizens wishing to dispose of items can drop them off at the curb at 8 a.m. This year, no registration with the City is required. Participants will simply have to place a sign indicating "To Donate" next to their items.

It is important to note that all items not collected must be picked up by 9 p.m. on Sunday. In case of rain, the decision to take the items outside or not is up to the participants. Thank you for your understanding.

Household hazardous waste and unprotected sharps will not be allowed to be displayed at the curb during the event, which will take place rain or shine.

Dates in 2024:

  • May 25 and 26
  • September 28 and 29

Environmental awareness officers

Every year, from May to August, environmental awareness officers travel the streets of the City to answer citizens' environmental questions. They educate, inform and advise the public on environmental protection, in addition to leading various environmental awareness activities.

Réparothon

The Réparothon is held every year in October. This free activity offers citizens the opportunity to discuss and repair various objects. The offer changes from year to year. In 2024, the Réparothon will be held on October 26 at the Centre multisports André-Chagnon.

Kiosks on location:

  • Aiguisage CL (knife sharpening - maximum of 3);
  • Cercle des fermières (simple clothing repair);
  • PC-Teck (solving computer problems);
  • Scout 19e Vaudreuil-Dorion (repair of clothing and broken or unsoldered objects);
  • Tricentris (good recycling practices);
  • City of Vaudreuil-Dorion (library, Le Lab and environment section).

The City of Vaudreuil-Dorion’s Environment Section will hold DIY workshops on how to make a tawashi
scrubber - a zero-waste sponge for scrubbing dishes, and shopping bags. Participants will be asked to
bring old socks or sweaters.

Citizens are invited to bring in their used books for minor repairs. In collaboration with the Lab, they will also be able to give a second life to their old clothes through digital printing. To do so, they will need to bring clothing or pieces of fabric, as well as their images in digital format on a USB key.

Citizens will also have the chance to dispose of their old batteries, ink cartridges, small electronic devices, corks and pencils at the City of Vaudreuil-Dorion's kiosk (environment section).

Conference : eco-friendly decor, 1:30 p.m.
With Vanessa Sicotte, from Damask & dentelle

What if a change of scenery was not in contradiction with overconsumption? At a time when we are collectively becoming aware of the damage done to the environment, can we still afford to follow decorating trends without contributing to the plague? Vanessa Sicotte, designer and historian of decorative arts, is convinced that it is still possible! During this conference, you will learn different tips such as: use what you have at home, make new with old, hunt deals like a pro, and create a unique and sustainable decor, without exceeding your budget.
