Insect hotel building contest

On the occasion of the 2026 Horticultural Fair, the Ville de Vaudreuil-Dorion is celebrating pollinators by launching a contest where creativity contributes to local biodiversity.

Goal

Create an insect hotel that welcomes and protects pollinators.

Criteria

The insect hotel must promote the welcoming and protection of pollinators in the area. Creations will be evaluated on May 9, during the Horticultural Fair, based on the following three criteria:

  • Originality of the concept
  • Quality and relevance of the construction for pollinators
  • Use of recycled or repurposed materials

Two participation categories

The contest is open to everyone, in two distinct categories:

  • Citizen category: residents of Vaudreuil-Dorion
  • Community category: groups of citizens, community organizations, and schools

The winner of each category will receive a prize.

“Public favorite” prize

On Saturday, May 9, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the Horticultural Fair, the public will be invited to vote for their favorite insect hotel. A prize will be awarded to the hotel that captures visitors’ hearts.

All submitted insect hotels will be installed in the city’s biodiversity areas and flowerbeds. Participants who wish to retrieve their creation can do so on Saturday, May 9, between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. in the municipal arena parking lot.

How to participate?

  • Build your insect hotel.
  • Fill out the participation form.
  • Bring your creation and the completed form to the lending desk at the municipal library before May 5, 2026 (2000, rue Émile-Bouchard).

Spontaneous entries will also be accepted at the arena site during the Horticultural Fair on May 9, between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Winners will be selected at the end of the day and contacted by the City.

Why participate?

Creating an insect hotel helps to:

  • Encourage the presence of pollinators essential to our ecosystems
  • Raise awareness among young and old about the importance of biodiversity
  • Give new life to repurposed materials
  • Contribute to a collective and ecological project

Bioblitz at parc-nature Harwood

From April 25th to April 28th, 2025, the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal (CMM) will participate in a global bioblitz called the Défi nature urbaine, organized by the Réseau Biodiversité au campus, Technoparc Oiseaux and the Fédération canadienne de la faune. During these four days, residents from over 400 cities around the world will attempt to document as many species of wildlife and flora as possible using the free iNaturalist application.

The City of Vaudreuil-Dorion is joining the movement by organizing a bioblitz at parc-nature Harwood. During this free and registration-free activity, citizens will contribute to establishing the biodiversity profile in Vaudreuil-Dorion, while advancing urban conservation efforts.

What is a bioblitz?

A bioblitz is a communal citizen-science effort to record as many species within a designated location and time period as possible. Bioblitzes are great ways to engage the public to connect to their environment while generating useful data for science and conservation.

Steps to follow

  • Download the iNaturalist app (available for Android and iPhone).
  • Photograph the species you find.
  • Upload your photos to the app and add details for species identification.

All observations recorded on iNaturalist will automatically count toward the Greater Montreal project.

How to upload an observation on the iNaturalist app?

What to bring

  • Closed-toe shoes, boots, or hiking shoes
  • Long pants
  • Weather-appropriate clothing (e.g., rain gear if it rains)
  • Binoculars (if you have them)
  • Water bottle or reusable cup

Cleaning chore

Take part in a community initiative dedicated to protecting our environment! The City invites you to a large-scale cleanup operation.

What to expect:

  • Cleanup of the park, shoreline, and riverbanks
  • Participation of divers recruited by the Comité ZIP

Bring your water bottle. Wearing long pants and closed-toe shoes is strongly recommended.

A great opportunity to help protect our natural environments while taking concrete action for the community!

Community orchard planting

The Ville de Vaudreuil-Dorion invites residents to take part in the planting of the community orchard, a unifying project resulting from the 4th edition of the participatory budget. Proposed by citizen Éric Jean, this community orchard aims to promote biodiversity, and civic engagement.

Located at Lorne-Worsley Park, the orchard will include 25 fruit trees, 90 shrubs, and 200 herbaceous plants. The site will be maintained by the community, without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

A first planting phase took place on October 4, 2025. A second phase is scheduled for May 14 at 6 p.m., during which approximately 20 fruit trees will be planted, including pawpaws, cherry trees, and peach trees.

Interested in joining the group of citizens involved in the community orchard?

Tree planting

As part of Tree and Forests Month and Quebec Intergenerational Week, the City of Vaudreuil-Dorion is organizing a tree-planting event at parc-nature Harwood on May 23, 2026 starting at 10 a.m.

This activity aims to bring together people of all ages and backgrounds around a common goal: protecting the environment. The planting will have a positive impact on both urban biodiversity and the fight against climate change.

We recommend that you wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. Don't forget your water bottle!

To reduce environmental impact, prioritize carpooling if possible.

Creating a ditch

ACTIVITY CANCELLED due to rain forecast

Did you know that a well-maintained ditch can improve water quality and promote biodiversity? Indeed, the vegetation that grows on its banks helps filter runoff water before it reaches waterways, thus reducing contaminants. It also serves as a habitat for many species and contributes to ecological connectivity.

To raise awareness of best practices, the Ville de Vaudreuil-Dorion invites you to take part in the creation of a model ditch by planting various shrubs, flowering plants and adapted seeds.

  • Saturday, May 31, between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m.
  • Parc des Sapins (rue des Sapins)
  • No registration required

Chasses aux trésors

Since 2020, the City of Vaudreuil-Dorion has been organizing the Chasse aux trésors to give a second life to objects. Citizens are invited to drop off furniture or other objects at the curb, at 8 a.m., that they wish to give to the next person and place a sign indicating "To Donate". On a first-come, first-served basis, interested parties will be able to take possession of these treasures, free of charge. Household hazardous waste and unprotected sharps will not be allowed to be displayed at the curb.

It is important to note that all items not collected must be picked up by 9 p.m. on Sunday. In case of rain, the decision to take the items outside or not is up to the participants.

Dates in 2026:

  • May 16 to 18
  • September 5 to 7

Environmental awareness officers

Every year, from May to August, environmental awareness officers travel the streets of the City to answer citizens' environmental questions. They educate, inform and advise the public on environmental protection, in addition to leading various environmental awareness activities.

Réparothon

The Réparothon is held every year in October. This free activity offers citizens the opportunity to discuss and repair various objects. In 2026, the Réparothon will be held on October 24 at the municipal hub (2000, rue Émile-Bouchard).
