The Municipal Patrol provides surveillance of the territory to ensure residents’ safety.
The Municipal Patrol carries out preventive and intervention surveillance duties, ensuring compliance with municipal by-laws. On the road seven days a week, it guarantees a response to all requests received via the 311 network outside the business hours of municipal services.
It is also responsible for assisting other public services to provide security at special or major events. The Municipal Patrol may be called on to assist officers of the Sûreté du Québec. Through their regular presence in the various City neighbourhoods, its officers also play a complementary role in crime prevention.
The Municipal Patrol supervises the application of general interest by-laws, mainly parking, animals, nuisances, trash, the use of drinking water, and generally speaking peace and good order in parks and public spaces.
Patrol officers are appointed and sworn in by Municipal Council as municipal officers. They have the power to issue violation tickets and to detain an individual for identification purposes in the event of a violation of municipal by-laws (articles 74 and 87 of the Code of Criminal Procedure). They may also use their inspection powers to investigate an offense on private property.
A Vacation Peace of Mind surveillance project is now provided by the Municipal Patrol 365 days a year!
As part of their regular patrols through City neighbourhoods, Municipal Patrol Officers will pay particular attention to residences whose previously registered occupants are away on vacation. This surveillance initiative does not guarantee to prevent malicious acts or major incidents, but aims to limit them.
