Collecting data on the vulnerability of the built environment
Characterization work underway in Vaudreuil-Dorion
As part of a province-wide project running until fall 2025, the Quebec government is collecting data on the vulnerability of the built environment in certain areas of Vaudreuil-Dorion.
This initiative is part of the Plan de protection du territoire face aux inondations : des solutions durables pour mieux protéger nos milieux de vie. The goal is to better understand the characteristics of buildings in order to equip municipalities and civil protection stakeholders.
What this implies
The surveys only cover main buildings (residences, businesses, institutions) and are conducted outside the properties. The data collected includes:
- The height of the front door threshold (ground floor);
- The height of the lowest opening (e.g., window or door providing access to the basement, if applicable);
- The number of floors and the distribution of dwellings, if necessary;
- Exterior photos (e.g., facade and location of measurements).
No access to the interior of the building is required. No confidential data is collected.
Who takes the readings?
Surveys are conducted by land surveyors appointed by the government or by representatives of the Quebec government. Under the Land Surveyors Act, these professionals may access private property to carry out their work. Your cooperation in allowing access to your outdoor yard is therefore essential.
Why is your property being targeted?
The targeted areas were identified mainly because of their proximity to a watercourse. It is important to note that this does not necessarily mean that your building is at risk of flooding. As a precaution, surveys are carried out even in cases of doubt.
Usefulness of data
The information collected will be used to:
- Improve land use planning;
- Develop disaster scenario models (e.g., floods, landslides);
- Support emergency response and community resilience.
