Return of weekly organic matter collections

As of Monday, April 15th,  the frequency of organic waste collections will resume on a weekly basis until November 15th. This service will be offered every Monday for all sectors of the City.

Since green residues are now accepted in the brown bins, which will be collected weekly between April 15th and November 15th, only two collections of green waste have been kept on the calendar for spring, to be carried out the weeks of April 29th and May 20th. Only paper bags and loose waste (e.g. in large plastic bins, trash bins other than rolling bins, etc.) are accepted for this collection. Such items must be placed at curbside by 7 a.m. on Monday morning to ensure they are picked up during the week. Three other collections are planned for the fall, during the weeks of October 21st, November 4th and November 18th.

In summer, mainly during periods of excessive heat, there is a possibility you will experience odours and the presence of flies and larvae in the brown bin. That said, placing yard and flower bed waste alternately with food waste should help alleviate the problem. Wrapping meat, fish and seafood residues in newspaper or storing them in the freezer until collection day will also help eliminate the presence of flies and larvae, as will storing the bin in the shade instead of the sun and using vinegar and baking soda when rinsing the bin.

Remember that plastic bags, even those marked as compostable, biodegradable or oxo-biodegradable, are not allowed in the brown bin. This measure aims to guarantee the quality of the compost that will be generated at the composting centre. The presence of plastic film can seriously compromise the efficiency of the decomposition process and alter the quality of the final product. It is therefore recommended to use paper bags, make packets out of unwaxed paper circulars or simply place bulk materials in the brown bin.

The Collections and Schedules section of the City's website offers a wealth of information on the various collections offered to the public. You can also find out on which days collections take place for your property by using the search tool available on the website or by consulting the municipal calendar.
