Ecosystem health and the emergence of new diseases
By Patrick Leighton, Associate Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Université de Montréal.
Exploring the links between ecosystem disruption and the emergence of infectious diseases. Using examples of animal-to-human communicable diseases (zoonoses) that have spread as a result of ecosystem disturbance, Dr. Leighton will attempt to answer the following questions:
- How important is it to maintain the integrity of our ecosystems to protect against emerging zoonotic diseases?
- What lessons can be learned to anticipate and even prevent the next animal pandemic?
