Following her international studies at the Université de Montréal, Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette continued her studies at Birzeit University in Palestine, before entering the Institut National de l'Image et du Son. Director, author, screenwriter and activist, Anaïs has now produced over twenty cinematographic works, written seven books and participated in the production of three stage documentaries. Her feature films Le Ring, Inch'Allah, La Déesse des mouches à feu and Chien blanc (adapted from Romain Gary's novel of the same name) have won awards in Canada and around the world, including at the prestigious Toronto, Pusan and Berlin film festivals. Anaïs has also produced several feature-length documentaries, including Les Petits géants and Se souvenir des cendres (a documentary following Denis Villeneuve's process during the shooting of Incendies), both of which won Gémeaux awards for Best Film. She was named Artist for Peace in 2012.

Anaïs is the author of the novel La femme qui fuit (translated in some twenty countries, voted "best seller in all categories" in 2016 and selected as one of the ten best Quebec novels of all time). Femme Forêt and Femme Fleuve follow, making their mark here and around the world. Her travel chronicles Embrasser Yasser Arafat, her children's albums Nos héroïnes and Nos fleurs, and her very first novel Je voudrais qu'on m'efface, now adapted for the small screen, continue to shine.

With Émile Proulx-Cloutier, Anaïs has penned three stage documentaries, including the recent Pôle Sud and Pas Perdus, which won the Best Theatre Show in 2021-2022 award from the Association québécoise des critiques de théâtre. She is co-founder of the Mères au front movement, which campaigns for the environment and children's health. In 2023, the Université du Québec en Outaouais awarded her an honorary doctorate for her significant contribution to human rights and environmental protection.
